Over 80 extraordinary musicians, dancers, and visual artists from UC San Diego, San Diego, and Baja California will create <strong>BlueRail&#8217;s<\/strong> audio-visual world. BlueRail will run at the Conrad Prebys Music Center on Sunday, October 9th,\u00a0<span class=\"il\">2022<\/span>, 2-4pm. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/events\/1335211153680885\/\">BlueRail on Facebook.<\/a><\/p>\r\n<h3>Trumpet, Violin \/ Electronics + Audience<\/h3>\r\n<p><strong>TV\/E+<\/strong> is an electro-acoustic contribution for BlueRail. <strong>Trevor Henthorn<\/strong> (aka &#8220;<em>Hipster Modular<\/em>&#8220;, San Diego) and <strong>Marilu Salinas<\/strong> (aka &#8220;<em>M A L U<\/em>&#8220;, Tijuana) will improvise <strong>Trumpet<\/strong> and <strong>Violin<\/strong> with a <span style=\"font-family: 'arial black', sans-serif;\"><strong>3<\/strong><\/span>rd component &#8211; mobilized <strong>Electronics<\/strong> with audience-influenced ambiance.<\/p>\r\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-1975\" src=\"https:\/\/trevor.ucsd.edu\/a\/wp6\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/BlueRail_2022-5-1024x691.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"248\" height=\"167\" srcset=\"https:\/\/trevor.ucsd.edu\/a\/wp6\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/BlueRail_2022-5-1024x691.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/trevor.ucsd.edu\/a\/wp6\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/BlueRail_2022-5-500x337.jpg 500w, https:\/\/trevor.ucsd.edu\/a\/wp6\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/BlueRail_2022-5-768x518.jpg 768w, https:\/\/trevor.ucsd.edu\/a\/wp6\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/BlueRail_2022-5-1536x1037.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/trevor.ucsd.edu\/a\/wp6\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/BlueRail_2022-5.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 248px) 100vw, 248px\" \/><\/p>\r\n<p>The battery-powered electronics, portable amplification and audience communication tools are transported throughout the building via (blue) trolley, participating in the various BlueRail stops.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<h3>Interactivity<\/h3>\r\n<p><em>The audience provides the ambience<\/em>. A field recording was recently captured of the <span style=\"font-family: 'arial black', sans-serif;\">3<\/span>-hour round trip on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sdmts.com\/inside-mts\/current-projects\/uc-san-diego-blue-line-trolley-extension\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">MTS Blue Line<\/a> from the UTC Station to San Ysidro and back, roughly between <strong>2pm-4pm on a Sunday<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-1974\" src=\"https:\/\/trevor.ucsd.edu\/a\/wp6\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/BlueRail_2022-6.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"138\" height=\"138\" srcset=\"https:\/\/trevor.ucsd.edu\/a\/wp6\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/BlueRail_2022-6.jpg 1023w, https:\/\/trevor.ucsd.edu\/a\/wp6\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/BlueRail_2022-6-500x500.jpg 500w, https:\/\/trevor.ucsd.edu\/a\/wp6\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/BlueRail_2022-6-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/trevor.ucsd.edu\/a\/wp6\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/BlueRail_2022-6-768x768.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 138px) 100vw, 138px\" \/>\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>The audience brings this Sunday afternoon sound of the trolley ambience into the Conrad Prebys Music Center in, what could be perceived as, real-time. They can even <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">scrub the playback<\/span><\/strong> to relive the sound of their favorite trolley stop or choose from TV\/E+ <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>curated sounds<\/strong><\/span> including the exterior recording of the trolley arriving and departing the UC Sa Diego Central Campus station. With their phones for amplification,\u00a0 audience improvisors participate with the improvisation by scrubbing their own timeline and optionally adding additional train-like rail-popping effects through the TV\/E+ BlueRail &#8220;popping candy&#8221; (from Zeta Espacial S.A.).<\/p>\r\n<p>Through the layering of looped Trumpet, Violin, Electronics and Ambience, we experience a smearing and crackling of time, collapse the <span style=\"font-family: 'arial black', sans-serif;\">3<\/span>-hour trip, bring UTC closer to San Ysidro, La Jolla closer to Tijuana.<\/p>\r\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-1971\" src=\"https:\/\/trevor.ucsd.edu\/a\/wp6\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/BlueRail_2022-2-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"151\" height=\"113\" srcset=\"https:\/\/trevor.ucsd.edu\/a\/wp6\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/BlueRail_2022-2-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/trevor.ucsd.edu\/a\/wp6\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/BlueRail_2022-2-500x375.jpg 500w, https:\/\/trevor.ucsd.edu\/a\/wp6\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/BlueRail_2022-2-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/trevor.ucsd.edu\/a\/wp6\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/BlueRail_2022-2-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/trevor.ucsd.edu\/a\/wp6\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/BlueRail_2022-2.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 151px) 100vw, 151px\" \/><\/p>\r\n<h3>Audio \/ Video Platform Control<\/h3>\r\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-1988 \" src=\"https:\/\/trevor.ucsd.edu\/a\/wp6\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/bluerail_anim1.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"194\" height=\"194\" \/><\/p>\r\n<p>The goal of TV\/E+ is to enable both skilled and unskilled improvisors to explore the nearly <span style=\"font-family: 'arial black', sans-serif;\">3<\/span>-hours of audio in a musical way. To realize this, the field recordings are presented in <span style=\"font-family: 'arial black', sans-serif;\">3<\/span> forms:\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li><strong>Full Video<\/strong> &#8211; The full <span style=\"font-family: 'arial black', sans-serif;\">3<\/span>-hour video is presented upon scanning the QR-Code. Audience Improvisors can immediately play the video (starting at 1:47pm), scrub the playback and optionally bring the video up full-screen. This works best on iPads and iPhones.<\/li>\r\n\t<li><strong>Split Video<\/strong> &#8211; As scrubbing <span style=\"font-family: 'arial black', sans-serif;\">3<\/span>-hours can be awkward, the video is also presented in halves (UTC to San Ysidro and visa vera).\u00a0<\/li>\r\n\t<li><strong>Video Download<\/strong> &#8211; Devices with slow (or no) internet may find that the &#8220;Download&#8221; link performs better. Those with laptops can download the video which provides the trolley stops as chaptered bookmarks.<\/li>\r\n\t<li><strong>Audio Only<\/strong> &#8211; Don&#8217;t care for the video, use the embedded audio objects.\u00a0<\/li>\r\n\t<li><strong>Sonic Scrubber<\/strong> &#8211; The curated audio files are presented with Sonic Scrubber links enabling audience improvisors to easily jump around and repeat audio gestures.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<h3>Significance + This Trip<\/h3>\r\n<p>The <strong>2019<\/strong> BlueRail performance ran as part of SpringFest on Sunday April 7, 2019. In <strong>March 2020<\/strong>, a two-week shutdown turned into a long-term campus shutdown changing both travel and the traditional college experience. On <strong>November 21, 2021<\/strong>, the UC San Diego Blue Line light rail extension opened and expanded the San Diego Trolley system from Downtown San Diego to the UTC Transit Center, serving nine new Trolley stations. After over <span style=\"font-family: 'arial black', sans-serif;\">3<\/span> years of change, BlueRail 2022 will occur on <strong>October 9, 2022<\/strong>.
